Compactors

December 21, 2006 at 10:38 pm (Uncategorized)

I discovered an article a couple of days ago about the compactors. Their manifesto compact

1) to go beyond recycling in trying to counteract the negative global environmental and socioeconomic impacts of U.S. consumer culture, to resist global corporatism, and to support local businesses, farms, etc. — a step, we hope, inherits the revolutionary impulse of the Mayflower Compact; 2) to reduce clutter and waste in our homes (as in trash Compact-er); 3) to simplify our lives (as in Calm-pact)

which basically means 2 things 1.Don’t buy new products of any kind (from stores, web sites, etc.) ((they do allow sanitary items to be purchased new))
2.Borrow, barter, or buy used.

While I am not certain how practical it would be for most, its  a pretty great concept.

Early gift!

December 21, 2006 at 10:13 pm (Harry Potter, books)

As has become Christmas tradition J.K. Rowling has updated her site today, opening the room of Requirement (click on the eraser)to give her fans a holiday treat. This year’s treat- the title to the 7th and final Harry Potter book

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

The title always includes an important plot element so let the speculation begin.

a lung with a view

December 21, 2006 at 12:03 am (Movies, T.V., rants)

I have blogged a few times that I have been ongoingly icky sick. (more on that in a minute)

what I have ommited (from shame) is that in my fatigue and sloth, I have been watching The View.

Anyways, This morning when discussing the miss USA scandal, Rosie talked about her views on Donald Trump. (not kind) Not surprisingly “the donald” has fired back . This Video on Access Hollywood sums up the hairpiece , the article sums up Rosie’s remarks. Trump has made an effort to brand himself and his projects as classy.  Seeing how many times you can call someone a loser in 3 minutes is not classy, its cheap.  Thinking that repeatedly calling someone unattractive makes superior only makes you look ignorant, Threatening to send someone to steal an adversary’s girlfriend is crude.   On his brand blog he brags that  “I avoid the commonplace and give tenants and buyers more than they might expect. That’s a big part of the Trump brand.” What is more commonplace than an spoiled elitist calling someone he doesn’t like an unattractive  loser? You can hear the interviewer quoting Trump calling Rosie a “fat little piggy” .It looks as if the donald is the one who doesn’t have sensibility as  he’ll say anything that comes to His unattractive mouth.

anyways back to my sickiness- broke down and went to the doctor’s today. I have the flu and a secondary bronchial infection. I have been given antibiotics and directions to get lots of rest, and drink lots of fluids. If certain symptoms don’t clear up by Saturday I am advised not to travel as I will still be highly contagious. As such it would not be recommended that I see my fragile grandmother.

so on doc’s orders I am going to bed early , sleeping in, having a whole pot of coffee and watching Die Hard and Love Actually.

my dog is awesome

December 19, 2006 at 10:23 pm (Uncategorized)

it seems every time I think my “rhino- thingy” is gone, it flares up again. The last two days of shopping and coughing things up has been less than enjoyable.  Two nights ago my dog wouldn’t stay on the bed as my coughing disturbed him. Last night I awoke below my pile of blankets and sleeping bag shivering. My dog must have heard my teeth rattling as he got up to sleep beside me despite my coughing. Sure enough it worked. I love my fur covered hot water bottle.

on the bright side I finished my shopping today. Although we are only doing stockings this year, I am quite pleased that I managed to do it all in 2 days (well, half days- I slept in) and on budget. Hopefully I chose well and everyone is happy.

square eggs

December 14, 2006 at 10:22 pm (Food)

back to baking today.

double brownies and chocolate ribbon squares, as well as chocolate chip cookies. A ton of cookies as Dad wanted to bring some to work that is another 5 hours of baking.

I think I deserve a reward so I am having a bit of Merlot tonight.

so how cool is this? Imagine the look on someone’s face when you served them a square egg!

no more cookies

December 13, 2006 at 11:58 pm (Food)

(who thought they would ever hear me say that?)

I have baked more cookies in the last few days than I should. I am baking for two Christmas celebrations. Yesterday I began baking at about 10 am and didn’t stop until 5:30 pm. Sadly I am not done yet. And I have not made any of the usual squares, or made any butter-cake. And I haven’t made the shortbread or any of the “non essential” cookies. Dad only gets shortbread once a year, and he can eat 3 batches in 2 days. not good.

Took a break from the baking today and set up the Christmas tree. (yes, its fake- shut up tree killers). Tree trimming without baileys is no fun. There is a province wide shortage of booze. It started in November and has now seeped into BC. bad bad bad.

holiday stuff and other stuff

December 11, 2006 at 8:54 pm (Food, Lowcarb Lifestyle, music)

Christmas is getting closer and as such plans are becoming a little more solid

Mom will be staying down south for Christmas. Her being there means her mom can spend both her birthday (24th)and Christmas at home (assuming she doesn’t  take a turn for the worse.)

Dad will be staying here to have Christmas with his mom.

Brother will come here and bring the girlfriend.

I will head south on the 23rd, taking the dog with me.

My sister was the only one smart enough to get out of the country.

anyways.. i started the holiday baking today.  not really feeling festive yet so I downloaded the holiday mix tape  at All Things Go. I love a good mix-tape.

still had time to read some interweb. This writeup on why bread and water are bad made me laugh.

what really freaked me out… this link  on metafilter to a collection of old advertisements on flickr. In itself more humorous than anything except this one. I had no idea that Lysol was marketed as douche and used as birth control. The thought makes me shudder.

listen to the warnings

December 8, 2006 at 7:41 pm (New stuff, T.V., Uncategorized)

you know when someone says “careful this is addictive” ? yeah well in the case of weffriddles they were right. I am now doomed to while hours away as I blunder through these puzzles. my new addiction.

speaking of addictive buffy is back. seriously. Whedon is creating an 8th season- in comic book form. Just when I thought I was getting to old to take up reading comics. i suppose this is the excuse I have been looking for to purchase previous seasons. I missed so much. It may be crucial, right? hehe
