the interwebs died!
despite my plan to post more regularly, my Internet provider seems to have other plans. 3 days with no interwebs is too long.
Initially I thought it was something I had done, or a virus. When a thorough check of my laptop turned out OK I checked the desktop, all good there. Having had a computer killing virus previously I was quite happy to have all systems go.
I called my Internet provider, Shaw. As with many companies these days I was greeted with an automated multiple choice answering system. When I pressed the right series of numbers I was transferred to someone that could help with the Internet. 10 minutes later the phone was still ringing. Figuring this was odd, after all where was the cheesy elevator music?, I hung up and called back.
Half an hour of bad elevator music later*, the service rep on the end of the line walked me through all of the steps I had already taken. He seemed to believe that I had done it wrong. 10 minutes later, when that yielded nothing, he told me my router was likely broken. Pfffft. I told him I had disconnected the router to see if that fixed the problem, but of course I had to try that with him on the other line. When that didn’t work he said “it appears there is a complaint out in your area, it was made 8 hours ago, and we do have someone in your area right now, the Internet should be working by the end of the night. – 3 days later its running.
* bad elevator music was occasionally interrupted for self promotion, advising me to “check it out on-line”, or “speak to a service rep” in a different field. yeah, right.
