sounds like a nightmare to me

March 17, 2008 at 10:12 pm (Garden, Job, Uncategorized)

Spring hit early here, last week we were sitting in temperatures averaging around +12C. The snow was rapidly melting, and tulips were reaching 4″ tall. In fact, even a monkshood had sprouted to almost an inch. Sadly, Saturday evening it began to snow, and the windchill had dropped to -21C. bleh. Coincidentally on Saturday the gossip mills at work added more details to the latest rumor: She who I have been training has been guaranteed the job of frame shop manager when our current manager goes on maternity leave. I had been told that she was in shop because they wanted someone else familiar with how it runs. It seems they have delayed my promotion because if I had said position, I would be the one to get the job.  grrrr. The indirect goal of the week, find out if rumors are true.

older, wiser (ha!) and a better blogger…

March 12, 2008 at 10:37 pm (Blogroll, Uncategorized)

once again I have taken a huge break from blogging. oops.

the flu that hit me lingered long and hard, and I believe is not dead yet.  The good news is the brain fog seems to be lessening, so I can now blog and make some sort of sense. So as a recap of what has been on my brain as of late

- had my birthday Saturday, great relaxing day ending in a ginormous slice of chocolate cake and a glass of Shiraz.

-my brother got hitched

- the catholic church added a few more deadly sins- I don’t know why this makes me laugh, but it does.

- Its when I see things like this I wish I were a computer whiz.

- new TV returns next month- hallelujah

I am sure there is more… but I will save that for another blog

still alive….. barely

February 18, 2008 at 12:59 am (Blogroll, Job, Movies, fibromyalgia, painting)

turns out I am really bad at this blogging thing.

life here has been going at its normal pace, work, eat, sleep, repeat.

quite a bit to update, so will say it in point form to say time

-saw Atonement- really enjoyed it. I  quite liked the theatricality of the soundtrack. I am sure it drove some insane.

-Finally got some of my art we got framed in September hung up. looks awesome. Makes me want to paint more.

-work promotion is “in the works”, management has told me the position is mine, but cannot make it official until the next level of management approves some things. my take is that if they put it off a bit longer, they will get a bigger year end bonus by saving the peanuts they would raise me. That and the stupidity that is internal politics, they need to ascertain if the store’s status has been raised from last year’s sales. If so someone from another area in the store will be joining the frame shop. and they dont want to say the position is taken, have someone get cranky and then come back a week (or in this case a month- grrr) and say the position is yours now

- the flu has hit the house. I curse the person that gave it to me. I was bed-ridden for 3 days, no meds would stay down for 2 of those, then I worked a day, and that sent me back to bed the last two days. its back to work tomorrow and I do not look forward to hit

- got a new bedspread, its a great change, and will hold me over nicely until I finally discover what I want to do with my room. Made curling up into a ball a little nicer.

Cloverfield

January 19, 2008 at 2:15 pm (Movies, friends)

Went and saw a movie at the theatre last night for the first time in forever. Not going to spoil Cloverfield for you, but will say I quite enjoyed it. I think if you go into it expecting nothing, you will enjoy it too. If you go into it expecting LOST, you will be disappointed. I will say that the whole thing is shot from the eye of an amateur holding a handheld camera, it is shaky and confusing to watch at times. I didn’t find it as hard to watch as the Blair Witch Project, which was shot with the same p.o.v. Mostly I am happy I saw it before I read a spoiler or had some dummy ruin the intrigue for me.

Work, work, work, movie, nap

January 13, 2008 at 11:01 pm (Job, Movies, books)

that about sums things up here. We had a huge sale last week, and that kept things quite busy. To put it in perspective, it used to be a busy day had me taking 5 orders. On Thursday I took 19!I am happy to be past the big sale at work and have our first week of no discounts since October.
Watched the Bourne Ultimatum last night. Over Christmas I had heard a couple of bad reviews, but I quite enjoyed it. It was well paced, the action sequences were just violent enough, and it managed to continue Bourne’s story while incorporating a lot of the details of the previous films. I am hoping they make the non-creator sequels into films too.

mp3 player=good

January 7, 2008 at 11:17 pm (New stuff, music)

We are a week into the new year and I am already wondering how I made it through last year without my mp3 player.  While I had originally thought I would like to load a book onto it, I know want to pack it with new music. It has been a while since I bought music rather that listening to it on-line, so my collection is a little dated. Before I begin purchasing new music I need some questions answered

- is it better for the computerly ungifted (i.e. me) to purchase music on disc so there is no chance of losing the music to the blue screen of death?

- what is a “reasonable” amount to spend on music?

- how do you I figure out where to start?

Is that un-Canadian?

January 4, 2008 at 12:34 am (Blogroll, fibromyalgia, rants)

Our local bylaws regarding sidewalks are what I would consider “common sense.” All snow must be removed from public sidewalks within 24 hours of the last snowfall. Additionally, homeowners are not supposed to run hoses and power cords across the sidewalks as they cause a tripping hazard.  Here in the land of block heaters, we tend to overlook power-cords running across the sidewalk.

Now that I have FM,and walk with the use of a cane,  I look at these things differently. Where it used to just annoy me that a number of places on my route to the bus stop would not shovel, it now makes me add an additional 5 minutes to my schedule so that I can navigate without a rush.  When these unshoveled sidewalks are draped with power-cords it makes me plot stabbity death. These same people who are too busy *cough*lazy*cough* to shovel are also the ones that park out front of the house because it is quicker than leaving by the parking spots behind their houses. The same parking spots that do not require an electrical cord to endanger my life.
I know that sounds like someone who is over-reacting, but its really not. If you doubt it, you trip and stumble on a power-cord hidden by snow, then as you try to stabilize yourself with your aluminum cane, try to remember to carefully place the tip of it so the sharp points on the ice tip do not puncture the live wire. I don’t begrudge people wanting to park out front and keep their cars plugged in, I just ask that they clean the snow from their walks so that I only have one danger to navigate.
It leaves me to ponder what would be more effective- calling the bylaw officer to complain, or unplug all their cars?

happy new year- have some random

January 1, 2008 at 11:59 pm (Food, Job, Movies, New stuff, books, fibromyalgia)

and that, boys and girls, was a month without blogging.

What does one do when they are not blogging? Well, when that month is December then they are pretty busy.  Here is the point form summary of sorts. After which I shall endeavor to blog like a sensible person who is concerned about maintaining their readership, OK?

work- the “expert framer” has left the building.. which is to say, she quit leaving the week before Christmas. The position is open, and I have put in a letter of application. Why? partly because its “what you are supposed to do”. With my medical state, I have been far from normal, and this is sort of a grab at normal. The position has guaranteed hours, a raise in pay and benefits after 3 months. whee.  Also, just as motivating, while I think my co-worker is a sweet girl, she is not management material.  With my frame shop manager being pregnant, someone will need to be in charge when she goes on mat leave. What management doesn’t know (and I didn’t know when I submitted my letter) is that she plans to quit before then.

Christmas- was nice,  ate lots of food that I should no longer be eating, got many a thoughtful gift and watched some good movies. Brother and girlfriend came, which was pretty draining. I didn’t get all of my baking done, have three mixed and unbaked bowls of dough sitting in the fridge. Happily mom was more productive than I so there were plenty of cabbage rolls.

Mom has headed back to Vulcan for an undetermined amount of time. I seem to blog less when she is around, so her trip away should help me get back in the swing.  I also hope to do some actual reading of books before she gets back. While there is a large stack of  novels piling up, I don’t know where I will start. What I want to do is locate a good site to download books on mp3. A great way to pass the time without having to carry a heavy book to and from work.

Now I am waiting not so patiently for Canada post to deliver a package I ordered. Michelle graciously  made time to pimp my cane. Not only will it be practical, helping my hands not to get chilled by the aluminum shaft and brass coupling that connects the handle, but every time I look at it it makes me smile.  I think if it were striped someone may think that knitta tagged my cane.

Good question

November 29, 2007 at 12:35 am (Blogroll, books)

I have never been a fan of Stephen Harper. When he created a tax cut for kids hockey my despise grew. Why not offer that same cut to those with kids in music and dance? To speak plainly in language I think Mr. Harper would understand- I think he’s a dimwit with no grasp of the arts and their importance to society. So today, when I heard about Yann Martel’s website- What is Stephen Harper Reading? I was keenly interested. When you read the story behind the website you will probably see why it resonates with me.

the post in which I try to sum everything up

November 26, 2007 at 2:10 am (Art, Blogroll, Food, Job, New stuff, Renovation, fibromyalgia, friends)

OK so I have been a little negligent on the posting…. while it may be easiest to shrug it off as all work related that would be a lie. Mostly I have been using what had been my “blog time” to research fibromyalgia. So what have I missed sharing?

-Saw K&K last week for the first time in  over 2 years, when  I got to meet the spawn of Bennett and see their new house-  kind of funny in that I used to see them regularly when they lived 2 hrs away. Now at 16  minutes away it doesn’t happen.

-Saw Andy and Dave with spawn 1&2 today. met at the mall and hit toys r us- twins in a toy-store is pretty entertaining, but might give you whiplash as you try to watch them run in different directions

- started holiday shopping early in an attempt to limit my last minute stress- have some how come away with new bunt pans, a new cake plate and a mini cheesecake pan for me. all on sale.  how did that happen?

- finished 4 of the 6 pieces I brought into work to frame. My art, framed properly….can’t wait to hang it.

-have trained 2 new girls at work. One I already hope will move on. Speaking of work, the “expert framer” complained to the store manager that our assistant manager was being to hard on her. He has been written up for this. It turns out expecting someone to show up for all of their shifts on time, and then be prepared to work (and not spend the first 15 minutes of their day applying makeup) is unreasonable. As someone who chronically clocks in 15 minutes early, this angered me.

- more progress has been made by mom in the home reno department. Maybe someday we may finish?

- I wish I had made these
